VW TRUCKS AND BUSES

IoT for Intelligent Yard Management

Volkswagen Trucks and Buses and Taggen develop IoT technology for intelligent yard management.

Volkswagen Trucks and Buses, in partnership with Taggen Industries & Services, initiates a pilot project at its factory in Resende (RJ), using Internet of Things (IoT) technology for more efficient vehicle yard management. The project aims to incorporate technological advancements to facilitate the geolocation of trucks and buses between the production line and external yards, optimizing current logistical processes and improving production flow.

“Our manufacturing strategy is focused on digitizing our factory. We have already made significant progress and have several initiatives underway to further strengthen this progress. In this regard, this pilot project aims to consolidate studies of initiatives that can bring even more agility to the production of Volkswagen trucks and buses, increasing our productivity,” says Hugo Souza, Production and Logistics Director at VWCO.

The pilot project includes the implementation of an exclusive system for identifying, monitoring, and tracking trucks and buses in production, in real-time, between the production line and yards. With over 1 million square meters, the VWCO factory requires optimization of Taggen’s solution to meet the scale of its operation. The reach in relation to the previous technology will be four times higher, with infrastructure demand reduced to less than 10% of what would be originally required.

Efficiency Maximization

Devices with 100% national technology – the so-called TaggenBeacons – are monitored by antennas (TaggenGateways) parameterized with technology for operation 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All connected to an independent network and with operation autonomy via battery and highly resistant to weather conditions to create the Real-Time Location System (RTLS).

These data are tracked by a cloud platform from Taggen and made available for the automaker’s professionals to quickly map the position of their vehicles. At any time, from any cell phone.

Werter Padilha, CEO of Taggen, explains that the partnership with Volkswagen Trucks and Buses was facilitated by researchers from the National Telecommunications Institute (Inatel), who are also partners of the startup in developing the entire solution for the system. Part of the resources involved in this pilot project comes from the agreement with the Brazilian Agency for Industrial Research and Innovation (Embrapii) through its Rota2030 program.

“We are very pleased with this partnership with Volkswagen Trucks and Buses, which is a market leader, a company always attentive to innovations that optimize its processes and investing in the advances of Industry 4.0 and IoT. This is a strategic project that will provide agility, efficiency maximization, and time reduction to VWCO. Our solution, which involves cloud systems, smartphones, and IoT devices, is already in the ‘go to market’ stage, and this first stage with VWCO is a significant step to prove the expected gains and returns,” highlights.
